Maria Cruz has been part of the Head Start program for over 36 years, dedicating her life to supporting children and families. Her journey with Head Start began as a parent volunteer, and over the years she has held nearly every role within the program—including janitor, classroom aide, teaching assistant, teacher, teacher mentor, health aide, bus monitor, recruiter, cook aide, and program director. Each position has shaped her into the person she is today and deepened her passion for serving families.
Maria’s connection to the work is personal. Having grown up working in the fields alongside her parents, she understands the challenges many families face and carries that empathy into everything she does. Driven by her commitment to make a difference, she worked hard to further her education so she could better support families in building brighter futures.
Beyond her professional role, Maria is a proud mother of seven and grandmother of 13. She credits her husband for supporting her long hours and dedication to Head Start, knowing how deeply it is tied to her purpose. Maria’s passion for serving families, her perseverance, and her belief in helping others succeed have been the foundation of her remarkable career.
